Hand Tied vs Genius Weft: Which One Should You Offer?

anthony.andreatos · Jun 13, 2026 ·

If you’ve been offering extensions for a few years, you’ve probably noticed that hand tied wefts and genius wefts often get talked about as if they’re interchangeable. They’re not. The methods are different, the client experience is different, and most importantly, the business math is different. Here’s what that actually looks like from the salon side.

What the Installation Actually Involves

Hand tied wefts are sewn onto a beaded row. You place a row of micro beads along the perimeter, then sew the weft onto that row with a needle and thread. A full install typically takes 3 to 4 hours depending on the number of rows and the stylist’s speed. Removal and reinstall (usually every 6 to 8 weeks) takes another 2 to 3 hours because the thread has to be removed, rows checked, and new wefts sewn in.

Genius wefts are applied differently. The weft itself is much thinner and more flexible than a standard hand tied or machine weft. You can apply genius wefts with beads or tape, and the weft lies flat against the head with very little bulk. A genius weft install runs 2 to 3 hours for a full head. Reinstalls are faster because you’re not dealing with thread, just releasing the beads and re-beading.

That hourly difference matters. If your chair books at $100 per hour, an extra hour per install is $100 you’re either capturing or leaving behind per client per visit.

Client Retention: Which Method Keeps People Coming Back

Both methods require maintenance appointments roughly every 6 to 8 weeks. That part is roughly equal. Where they differ is in what happens between appointments.

Hand tied clients tend to have more questions in the first few weeks, especially around tension. If the bead row isn’t placed well or the weft tension is too tight, you’ll hear about it. Genius wefts, because of the thinner weft and flexibility, tend to produce fewer discomfort calls. That’s not a knock on hand tied – it just has a steeper learning curve to get the install right consistently.

On the retention side, clients who invest in premium extensions generally do come back. The issue is that both methods compete with cheaper alternatives like tape-ins. Your job is to sell the upgrade: longer wear, better movement, no adhesive. If you frame the maintenance appointment correctly at the start (bi-monthly, ongoing), hand tied and genius weft clients book ahead and cancel less often than tape-in clients.

Price Point and Margin

Salon pricing varies a lot by market, but the general range for a full hand tied install lands between $700 and $1,200 for the service, separate from the cost of the hair. Genius wefts are priced similarly, sometimes slightly less because the install is faster, sometimes the same if the salon prices by result rather than by hour.

The hair itself is where it gets interesting. A full head of hand tied wefts typically uses 150 to 200 grams, sometimes more for thick hair. At wholesale pricing for premium Russian hair, that’s roughly $300 to $400 for the hair alone at 20 inches. Genius wefts at the same weight and length run in a similar range, though some salons stretch genius wefts further because the thin construction allows more coverage per gram than a thicker hand tied weft.

If you’re marking hair up 80 to 100 percent at retail (a common salon margin), the hair markup alone on a full genius weft set comes out to $175 to $250 per client per initial install. That number doesn’t change much at reinstall since you’re using existing hair, though some clients need additional wefts over time.

Who Each Method Actually Suits

Hand tied wefts work best for clients with at least medium density hair. The beaded row needs enough natural hair to hide it. Fine-haired clients can get hand tied done, but you need to be precise about row placement and weight distribution. Done poorly on fine hair, hand tied can cause tension-related shedding.

Genius wefts are more forgiving on fine hair because the weft is so thin. The flat profile means less visible bulk at the root even on clients with thinner sections. If most of your extension clients are fine-haired, genius wefts are easier to deliver consistently without complaints.

For volume-heavy clients who want dramatic results and have the natural density to support it, hand tied gives you more placement options, especially around the nape and perimeter. The row system is structured and predictable for stylists who’ve mastered the technique.

Which One Should You Actually Add to Your Menu

If you’re currently offering only one of these and considering adding the other, the answer usually comes down to your current client base. If you’re doing tape-ins mostly and want to move up-market, genius wefts are the easier entry point. The install learning curve is lower, the product is versatile, and the client experience is generally smoother right out of the gate.

If you already have an established extension clientele and want to offer something more premium and longer-lasting, hand tied wefts give you a higher perceived value service that clients are willing to pay a premium for.

Many salons end up offering both and use the consultation to guide clients to the right fit. That’s probably the right answer for most. The key is knowing your hair supplier well enough that the quality is consistent across both formats. Inconsistent hair quality is what kills the client relationship faster than technique ever will.

Both methods, done with good hair and a clean technique, produce strong long-term client retention and recurring revenue. The difference is in the execution details and who you’re working on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between hand-tied wefts and genius wefts?

Hand-tied wefts are made by manually tying small bundles of hair onto a thin thread, creating an ultra-flat and lightweight weft with no sewn seam. Genius wefts use a machine-stitched reinforced track that prevents shedding when cut, making them easier to customize per client without damaging the weft integrity.

Which weft type is easier for stylists to install?

Genius wefts are generally easier to work with because they can be trimmed to any length without unraveling, which simplifies custom fitting. Hand-tied wefts require more precision during installation to avoid cutting through the knot line and causing shed.

Are hand-tied or genius wefts better for thin hair clients?

Both options are suitable for thin hair when installed correctly using the right beaded row or sewn method. Hand-tied wefts are slightly thinner at the track, which can be an advantage for clients with very fine hair who want minimal visibility at the root.

How do price points compare between hand-tied and genius wefts?

Hand-tied wefts are typically more expensive due to the labor-intensive manufacturing process, often costing 20 to 40 percent more than genius wefts of comparable quality. For salons, genius wefts often offer better margin while still delivering a premium result for clients.

Can genius wefts be cut without shedding or unraveling?

Yes, cutting genius wefts is one of their key advantages over standard machine wefts. The reinforced stitching on both sides of the track seals the hair in place, so stylists can cut them at any point to achieve a custom fit without losing hair from the cut edge.
